My grandfather Nicolaas Schoen was an eyewitness to the shooting on Dam Square when he was fourteen. This made a deep impression on him and has become an important part of our family story. His second wife told me about his experiences a few years ago. Grandpa was visibly suffering from war trauma, such as fighting in his sleep. Unfortunately, I was never able to talk to him about it.
