On May 7 the Canadians would come at last, so I went to the Dam to greet them. The “Armed Forces” were a disappointment: a few stretcher-bearers, trucks and a luxury jeep with VIP’s.
The Dam was getting crowded with enthusiastic starving Amsterdammers. Of course boys and girls were climbing on the vehicles. From that I made some shots with my Agfa folding camera.
When the army vehicles just drove away, German soldiers started to shoot on the crowd from the balcony from the Groote Club. Panic all over! I remember I got covered beneath a mass of people with the thought: at least I can’t get hit. It was quiet scary. The Domestic Armed Forces were lined up behind lamp posts shooting back.
